Biography

Barbara R. Deane, M.A., is Vice President of The GilDeane Group, Inc. She serves as the training director and lead consultant for cross-cultural and diversity management projects.

Barbara focuses her work on the exciting intersection of culture, diversity and business performance. She approaches her work from the foundation of culture, both at the social and organizational levels, as a basis for understanding and constructing processes for effectiveness and change.

She has developed and managed consulting and training projects for a variety of government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and non-profit organizations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. She conducts learning projects from start to finish: designing the needs assessment, developing the instructional design, training materials, case studies, and evaluation, and delivering the training program.

Barbara leads the firm's organization of a unique consortium of employers in Seattle, the NW Diversity Learning Series. Now in its eight year, the series consists of six bi-monthly seminars sponsored by leading NW employers including The Boeing Co., Microsoft, Nordstrom, Starbucks Coffee Co., SAFECO, The Port of Seattle, The Bon Marche, Weyerhaeuser, Medtronic Physio-Control, Seattle Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, and Speakeasy Network. She also facilitates the Diversity Sponsors Network made up of the sponsoring organization's diversity leaders.

Barbara is the editor-in-chief of the firm's online publications, DiversityCentral.com, Cultural Diversity at Work Online, and the CDW Archive, an article database. She is a published author of more than 100 articles on managing work force diversity and cross-cultural effectiveness.

She earned a B.A. with distinction in intercultural communication from The Ohio State University, and an M.A. in interpersonal communication from the University of Washington, Seattle. She has conducted research on the cultural aspects of Mexican business and on the legacy of the 16th-century interpersonal concept of respeto (respect) among contemporary Mexican Americans. She speaks Spanish, has lived in Mexico several extended periods, and has traveled in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru.

Barbara is a member of The Diversity Collegium (a national network of consultants), the Society for Human Resource Management, and the Diversity Sponsors Network (Seattle).
